Municipal Drainage

There are total 734 municipal local bodies in the state, in which, the current status of water harvesting system is as follows: -

Geographical location of Jhansi is not good for sewer network.

A partial sewer system is currently in place across all 65 cities mentioned, with efforts underway to establish comprehensive sewerage infrastructure.

State Sector Program

The government has issued financial sanctions totaling Rs. 758.47 crore for 31 water harvesting schemes as of March 2022. Of these, 17 schemes have been fully completed, while work on the remaining 14 schemes is currently ongoing. Out of the Rs. 658.07 crore released by the government, Rs. 583.87 crore has been utilized.

AMRUT (Atal Mission for Renewal and Urban Transformation)

The Government of India launched the ambitious 'Amrit 2.0' scheme on October 2, 2021, aiming to ensure clean drinking water for all urban citizens through piped water by 2025. Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam has been appointed by Government Order No. 76/Nine-5-2022-4SA/2022 dated January 6, 2022, to oversee drinking water and sewerage projects.
As part of the initiative, Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam collaborated with urban executive officers to develop City Water Balance Plans and City Water Action Plans, which were subsequently uploaded to the Government of India's website. The government allocated an initial installment of Rs 8000 crore, from which 101 projects totaling Rs 7362.27 crore were proposed for drinking water and water harvesting.
A State Level High Powered Steering Committee, chaired by the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh, was formed under Government Office Memorandum No- 77/Nine-5-2022-4SA/2022 dated January 11, 2022. In its first meeting on March 9, 2022, the committee approved 101 projects costing Rs. 7361.79 crore.

Among the 101 schemes mentioned earlier, 25 schemes are slated to commence within 100 days to 6 months, while the remaining 76 schemes are scheduled to start between 6 months and 1 year.

Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0

Under the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0, Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam (Urban) has been designated as the implementing agency by Government Order No.-91/Nine-5-2022-03SA/2022 dated January 6, 2022, for water harvesting in cities with populations below 1 lakh. In the initial phase, 112 cities have been selected for this program.
Cities of religious, historical, and tourist significance have been given priority, and the City Sanitation Action Plan amounting to Rs. 697.45 crore has been finalized for 37 cities. The approval for these plans is set to be presented before the upcoming State Level Technical Committee.

The funding of the scheme has been determined as under:-

Centre share- 50 percent

State share- 33 percent

ULB share- 17 percent

Operation & Maintenance - (STP)

Following the "one city, one operator" principle, private agencies are responsible for operating and maintaining 29 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) with a combined capacity of 1135.30 million liters per day (MLD) across 14 cities in Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam oversees these operations and receives a supervision fee equivalent to 10 percent of the project cost.
Additionally, Jal Nigam independently operates and maintains 23 STPs with a total capacity of 559.05 MLD. The government reimburses the actual expenses incurred for these operations and maintenance activities.
